The popularity that the TV series Game of Thrones reached as been astounding, we can say that the popularity has been achieved not only due to great action scenes and characters with excellent psychological development but also due to the creativity of the filming. Game of Thrones was filmed in studios in Belfast but also in site on Northern Ireland, Croatia, Iceland, Morocco, Spain, Malta, Scotland and the United States. Currently the series goes on the fifth season, but the sixth season is already a reality.
Game of Thrones was created by David Benioff and D.B.Weiss as an adaptation of George Martin’s novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. The action takes place on the continents of Westeros and Essos, the story begins with a violent civil war with noble houses of Westeros fighting for the right to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms with additional menaces from the continent of Essos. With the first season it’s possible to see every detail in the original novel; however, in the following seasons the story begins to follow a different path.
The following seasons follow similar traits of the Medieval Europe, namely the English War of the Roses, for the continent of Westeros. Other historical elements that were also present in the series were Atlatis, pictured as Valyria, the Greek Fire portrayed as wildfire, the Icelandic Vikings as the Ironborn, the Mongols as the Dothraki and even elements from the Renaissance. Combining all of these elements into a virtual world made the series credible, the fact that a sixth season is awaiting is sign that the popularity didn’t decrease at all.
Game of Thrones success sets not only on a good story, historical elements combined into one but also with the cast, the largest of all television series, with 257 names so far. Several of the cast elements have an option for a seventh season, sign that the cast has achieved great success too, and the names have become popular and attractive to other types of appearances other than TV series.
The popularity of the series made it possible to commercialize into other segments, such as merchandise and even expeditions to the cities in which Game of Thrones was filmed, we can say that it was of great help to the local economies, something that the regular TV viewer is not aware of.
The Guardian considered Game of Thrones as the biggest drama in a TV series, and while the ratings are still very high, it’s very possible that it peaked during season 4, since season 5 has suffered a slight decrease in the number of viewers comparing with the last season, nonetheless, from season 2 to season 5, Meta-critic provide a rating of 90 and above for the series, which makes it a worldwide success, which is an achievement, especially when we consider that normally, series with a strong basis of elements of sex and violence struggle to be at the top.
